the release point is the same, but like when you shift to first, you have to ease into it. I mean that I think you're not easing it off enough... 4-5, 5-6 you cna push, shift release, but 2-3, 3-4 you need to ease more than just releasing the clutch. -- "I don't know if it's that I just haven't driven a 6-speed for awhile or what." that could be it - were you used to driving a 5sp?

again, its possible you've got a gear with a missing tooth or something. tell you what, try double clutching the shift to 4th gear. see what happens. if the noise doesn't happen, stop, then DC into 3rd gear.
