This writeup is a step by step process of removing the shifter and replacing it with a new one or simply to get access to the shifter mounting area within the back end of the transmission.
Tools Needed:
1. 7mm, 10mm, 13mm sockets
2. Ratchet
3. Small Extention
4. Flathead screw driver
5. Putty scrapper
6. RTV Silcone Sealant
Install time: 1/2 hour - 1 hour
Put your shifter into neutral!
1. First open the center console and remove the coin tray and set a side. Next you will notice 4 bolts (2 under the coin tray) and two on the bottom of the console. Remove the bolts with below pic showing appropriate socket sizes.
2. Next up near the front bezel on the driver and passenger side there is a 10mm bolt that needs to be removed.
3. Now remove the center console part that contains the middle cup holder and shifter boot. You will need to un-clip the light assembly for the ash tray, as you just simply turn it and pull out, and the cigarette lighter plastic clip. You will also need to remove the shifter ball in order to remove this piece.
4. Next you will see the last 10mm bolt to remove the entire center console.
You will also need to disconnect the power AUX outlet on the passenger side near the front bezel. This is just a clip that is pushed down on the top.
To ease the removal of the center console pull the E-Brake far up (vertical) as possible without damage, be careful by going one notch at a time. Then pull the entire console out towards the rear and up.
5. You will now need to remove the (2) 13mm bolts holding the stick of the shifter to the shifter mount. Next you are left with the rubber boot over the shifter assembly. There are (7) 7mm bolts that you will need to remove. Once all are removed you may need to use a flathead screwdriver to get under the boot and pry it off. It may be tough to remove with your fingers if it's never been removed before.
6. With the rubber boot removed you are now left with just the shifter plate. There's (4) 13mm bolts that need to be remove. Now you will want to use a flathead screwdriver to pry off the mounting plate from the transmission face.
Make sure your shifter is in neutral.
7. Now with the shifter off you are looking into the end of the transmission. There should be some type of sealant remaining on the edge of the transmission mounting face for the shifter that will need to be removed. Use a putty knife or scraper to remove all of the sealant to a nice smooth surface.
Once all the sealant is removed apply a new coat of RTV sealant on the edge and avoid getting any near the bolt holes. Now apply your new shifter and bolt everything back up in the order of removal!
Congrats on your new shifter install!
