How about installing an image auto re-sizer for threads. I know one is available at vbulletin.org.

that's actually a great idea... just not enough picture threads yet for it to actually take effect and have an impact. will look into it though and I'm sure it's not hard to implement

Not at all. I always install it on my own forums. Takes about 5 minutes at most.
