Default Leak at Rear Main Oil Seal

First off, I wasn't really sure where to put this thread, but this sounded like the best spot for it.

If you have been following my Auto Trans thread, then this is its follow-up. My father and I decided to let a trusted shop take a look at the oil leak before we bothered with the transmission gasket and filter. What they told us was worse than we expected. The oil leak was coming from the Rear Main Oil Seal, where the transmission is directly connected. So that's my major problem. Since the car was mainly garaged for past three years, my father suspects that the seal just went bad over time due to no oil keeping it normally lubricated. Unfortunately, the car is leaking oil from the pan as well, albeit nowhere near as bad. So now, I have to pay for both leaks to get fixed while having the car in the shop once. I also mentioned about the transmission work we were planning to do, so they'll take care of that for us since they have to remove the transmission anyway. All in all, I'm looking at spending about $1200 plus for everything to get done. Unfortunately, I just don't have any other options, and I'd rather have my car in working order than risking that minor leak to get any worse.

you guys don't have acess to working in your garage? pulling the tranny is plenty possible in about 4 hours with two people. BTW what gasket are you talking about in the tranny?

Pulling the transmission may be do-able, but I'm talking about the oil pan. We just don't have the tools to lift the engine, let alone removing the bracings underneath without screwing something up. It's something that neither of us can trust working on by ourselves. Also, the gasket I'm referring to is the one for the transmission pan. Besides, it will all be done by tomorrow anyway.

you don't have to lift the engine up to take the pan off... like i mentioned in your other thread, you just need to unbolt one side of the K-member and get some leverage with a bar to pull it down and the pan will slide right out as it clears space. just FYI
